The Swiss Citizenship Knowledge Test: Everything You Need to Know

The civic knowledge test is mandatory in almost every Swiss canton. With proper preparation it presents no particular difficulty — but it does require a methodical approach.

What is the civic knowledge test?

The test verifies that applicants have sufficient knowledge of Switzerland's institutions, history, geography and civic life. It is not a language test — that is assessed separately — but a content test on the foundations of Swiss citizenship.

It is distinct from the municipal interview, which evaluates integration and local community ties. The knowledge test can usually be taken before the municipal procedure even begins.

The five topics covered

Swiss institutions: Federal Council, Parliament (National Council and Council of States), Federal Tribunal, direct democracy (referendums, popular initiatives).

History: from the Federal Charter of 1291 to key 20th-century dates, neutrality, cantonal history. Geography: 26 cantons, major cities, lakes and rivers, the Alps. Civic life: fundamental rights, civic duties, AVS, school system. Cantonal specificities: institutions, history and notable figures of your canton of residence.

Format and minimum score by canton

Zurich (ZH): 30 written questions, minimum 22/30 (73%). Geneva (GE): 60 online questions, minimum 75%. Vaud (VD): ~30 online questions. Bern (BE): written test, format varies by municipality.

In most cantons, the test can be retaken after a few months if you fail.

How to prepare effectively

Regularity beats intensity: 15 minutes of quiz practice per day for 2 months is more effective than last-minute cramming. Start with federal institutions (they appear in every test), then your canton's specificities, and finish with history and geography.

Our quiz covers all topics for all 26 cantons, in French, German, Italian and English. You can filter by canton and theme to target exactly the areas you need to work on.
