Bern, a bilingual canton: what are the rules?
On top of the federal 10-year requirement, Bern requires at least 2 years in the canton. The language of the procedure depends on your municipality: German in the Mittelland and Oberland, French in the Bernese Jura. The required level is B1 oral and A2 written.
Participation in community life is particularly valued in Bern. Municipal committees place great importance on activities in sports clubs, neighbourhood associations or volunteer organizations.
The Bernese naturalization procedure step by step
You file your application with your municipality. A personal interview with the municipal committee is required. The municipality then sends its recommendation to the cantonal migration office (SMEC).
Bern is known for a faster process than most other cantons: on average 12–24 months. The SMEC reviews cantonal conditions and forwards to the SEM for non-EU/EFTA nationals.
The knowledge test in Bern
Bern requires a civic knowledge test. In German-speaking municipalities, the test covers federal institutions, Swiss history and Bernese specificities. In the French-speaking Bernese Jura, the test is in French.

Costs and practical tips
Bernese fees are among Switzerland's most affordable: CHF 300–700 at municipal level, around CHF 300 cantonal, and CHF 100 federal. Some small Bernese municipalities charge under CHF 200.
