Zurich-specific requirements
On top of the federal 10-year requirement, Zurich requires at least 2 years of residence in the canton. The city of Zurich itself requires an additional 2 years of municipal residence. The required language level is German B1 oral and A2 written — a higher level is recommended as the committee hearing is conducted in standard German.
Zurich also requires passing the Einbürgerungstest: 30 multiple-choice questions on federal institutions, Swiss history and Zurich-specific topics. Minimum score: 22/30 (73%). If you fail, you can retake the test after a few months.
The Zurich naturalization procedure
You file your application with your municipality (Gemeinde). You complete a detailed form and submit all supporting documents. A hearing before the municipal naturalization committee is usually required.
After municipal approval, the canton of Zurich reviews the file. For non-EU/EFTA nationals, the SEM must also approve. The full process typically takes 18 months to 3 years.
The Einbürgerungstest: how to prepare
The Zurich test consists of 30 multiple-choice questions in standard German covering: civic rights and duties, Swiss political institutions, Swiss history, geography, and Zurich-specific topics.
The best preparation is regular practice with official questions. Our quiz covers exactly the Einbürgerungstest topics with hundreds of Zurich-specific questions, available in German.
