Vaud-specific requirements
On top of the federal 10-year requirement, Vaud requires 3 years in the canton and 1 year in your current municipality. The required French level is B1 oral — a French interview will take place during the communal procedure.
Vaud places great importance on social and professional integration. Municipal committees scrutinize local participation: associations, volunteering, cultural or sporting activities.
The Vaud procedure in detail
You file your application with your municipality's Contrôle des habitants. A personal interview with the naturalization committee is required. The municipality sends its recommendation to the Bureau de l'intégration et de la naturalisation (BIN).
Vaud is known for longer processing times: 2–4 years depending on the municipality. Lausanne and larger cities are particularly busy.
The Vaud civic knowledge test
Vaud requires an online civic knowledge test on the cantonal portal vd.ch. It features around thirty questions on federal institutions, Swiss history and geography, plus Vaud-specific topics.
Our quiz offers hundreds of Vaud-specific questions covering exactly the cantonal test topics. Practice regularly to reach the required minimum score.
